U.S. Marine Corps photo by Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Loewy/Released 121109-M-PK171-002.JPG

Lieutenant Gen. Robert B. Neller, Commander, US Marine Corps Forces Central Command, speaks to the Tampa Bay community, gathered downtown at the Joe Chillura square, to celebrate its veterans and remember those who could not be with us. In his remarks, Neller told a personal story about a watch-stander he met in Al Anbar, Iraq. His story spoke to the burden of the watch-stander, the burden of those left behind, wondering why it was their buddy and not them who had paid the price. The watch-stander he tells of was recounting a story of how his friend and squad mate was killed the day before their encounter. Neller, noticing how he was having a hard time dealing with the loss, began to explain, “Sometimes you can do everything right and it just doesn’t work out. If your buddy were here, he’d tell you that you did the best you could and need to press on and accomplish the mission. You and the rest of your squad need to move on as best you can and take care of each other today. To do otherwise would be to dishonor his memory.”
